Pennies for Hittler

Traumatized, I leave Elizabeth’s house in this chaotic world. Babies crying in terror, buildings crashing down with a boom. In the hot red flames my body starts shaking with pressure. The library has turned into rubble. Houses disappearing with another bomb. My body is sweating with fear, “has our flat disappeared and is aunt Miriam dead?” The blood on my hands rubs in my mouth tasting like iron. The smoke goes into my nostrils making me sneeze. l was numb. My own kind has done this destruction. I could hardly see my own way back. I have no time to think… I should go faster. If aunt Miram was in the flat and died OMG who will take care of me now. Oh, my confusion is getting worse and worse. In the red flames I can see a shadow coming my way. It was Aunt Miriam. I feel safe once more.

Choie Sew Hoy was a well-known business leader who was a miner. He change his mind and became a seller because they made more money than miners.  He formed a  society who worked in cemeteries around Otago to dig up the bodies of Chinese men to take them back to China. He got married and had four children and then remarried to another woman and had two more children.

Choie died in 1901 and his dead his body was being sent back to China on the Ventnor. On the journey the boat struck a rock off Taranaki. The ship continued to north but sunk in Omapere beach. Years later bones were washed up on West Coast beaches of the North Island.

Choie worked hard to  end the racism from the New Zealand Government.

Choie Sew Hoy spoke out. He said this tax broke agreement with Britain had signed with China to give people a free entry to New Zealand.

The legacy is his business and family in New Zealand who celebrated 150 years of ancestry.

Lenten backpack

In my Lenten backpack I have a Bible so I can continue to learn all about God .

I have some clothes and food  so I can help the poor as I go on my journey.

I have a rosary that my grandma gave me before she passed away, it protects me on my journey.

I have packed my backpack with a bottle  of water so I can be hydrated on my journey.

I have money in my bag to help the marginalised so their needs can be provided for.

I packed this bag for my Lenten promise.

The Treasure Box

Dear Diary,

This is me, your friend Peter. Today was not nice, I experienced people bending down, wiping their faces. People helping others to walk miles and miles for safety. People taking  the ash and dust out of their shoes. I was frustrated walking that long.  My feet hurt. Small rocks annoyed the souls and toes of my feet. The voices of little children that died echoing still in my ears. Even after we stopped I continued thinking. People now are trying to huddle to stay warm.  I cuddled close to my father on a pillow that was the memories of my mom.
